Edible landscaping

Edible plants come in nearly all shapes and sizes and can perform the same functions as ornamental plants. Like all plants, edible plants grow best in certain conditions. Many (but not all) fruits and vegetables do best where they receive at least 6 hours of full sun a day and usually prefer well-drained soil.

There are many reasons a client would benefit from adding edible plants into their home or business landscape design.

  • Visually beautiful and professional in appearance
  • Limit the chemicals used in the foods you eat
  • Encourages your family to choose healthy snacks – straight off the vine!
  • Gardening is relaxing and acts as a stress reducer, often lowering blood pressure and reducing anxiety
  • Grow unusual and unique produce not commonly available in grocery stores
  • Provides a measurable sense of accomplishment
  • Provides fresh, home-grown, fully-ripened fruits and vegetables
  • Save on grocery bills
  • Teaches children patience and caregiving skills
  • Demonstrates a company’s commitment to ‘Going Green’

Edible options

  • Bushes and Trees: guava, citrus trees, apple trees, plum trees, peach trees, avocado trees, nut trees, and pomegranate
  • Flowers: daylily, borage, calendula, English daisy, nasturtium, pansy, rose, squash, sweet violet, and fuchsias
  • Ground Covers: thyme, strawberry, sage, mint, oregano, and chamomile
  • Shrubs: curly parsley, rosemary, oregano, savory, marjoram, basil, chives, dill, garlic, onion, asparagus, strawberries, blueberry, rhubarb, leaf lettuce, fennel, ginger, Swiss chard, mint, chrysanthemum, and bachelor’s buttons
  • Vines: snow peas and garden peas, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and grapes

To begin an edible landscape, you might start simply with a one-for-one substitution. Plant a fruit tree where you might have planted a shade tree. Plant a currant or hazelnut where you need a deciduous shrub.

  • Control the quantity and kind of pesticides and herbicides used on the foods you eat

  • Increase the amount of food in your household
  • Provides a measurable sense of accomplishment
  • Provides fresh, home-grown, fully-ripened fruits and vegetables

  • Ground and Raised-Bed Gardens: Let California Victory Gardens help you get your garden started. We assess your location and soil, recommend the best ways to design your garden for optimal growth and production, and build it. We also design specialty gardens for certain goals and gardening styles. These include youth gardens and gardens for the mobility-challenged.
  • Youth Gardens: Gardening benefits kids' health and well-being, their attitudes towards learning and the environment, their connections to their community, and their feelings of personal accomplishment. We design ‘youth gardens’ to encourage stewardship and curiosity, nurturing skills, and introduce them to healthy foods. According to research, youth gardens are particularly helpful in reducing symptoms of attention-deficit disorder and ADHD.  We can also help select plants to increase successful results, and ultimately help your child reap the rewards of patience and persistence.
